"69" M151A2 MUTT

I have started to restore a M-151A2 MUTT. I noticed that the word "PROTO" was in the 7th thru the 11th place inside the VIN number. Would this have any special meaning, I've never seen the word "PROTO" in a VIN number before.

Also, is there a way to find out what unit this vehicle was assigned to. I'd like to put the unit designation on the bumper.
