WW1 uniform ID....

All I have are these two pix of this fellow. The family says he was a US citizen from Ohio and born in 1897 which would make him 19 in 1916. He doesn't look that old in these two photos but that can be decieving.

And of course, they, the family, could be wrong about his birth year. His son, who is looking to find out about this is only about 67 or so years of age and that would make his father a "late bloomer": a dad at 44!

Does anyone recognize the uniform?, partictulary the cap. And... what of the Mauser bayonet?

So who did this Ohio boy serve with?

This looks to be an Euorpean uniform. And he was clearly an American.

Both this dress uinform and his working uniform have that same (or so it seems) characteristic "pointy pocket flap" look to them.

Is the last name Polish or Czechoslovakian?

There were American "legions" of volunteers of both these nationalities.

His name was John Gano and he returned with a Checosovakian wife.

Possibly he served in one of the Czech legions. I know they existed, but I don't know much else about them. I do know the American-Polish Legion wore modified US uniforms. But I know far less about the Czech Legions.

You might try posting this over on John Sheehan's WW1 site:

There are a lot of European collectors over there.

The Czech Legion makes sense with the A/H uniform as the bulk of the Legion was Austro/Hungarian deserters and PoW.
