She attended the University of Texas at Austin with a major in mathematics. She listed her interests as flying, mathematics, aviation, navigation and meteorology. She was employed at the Randolph Field Flying Instructors School by the Army Air Corps as a clerk in in charge of administering and grading tests, monthly reports and compilation of grades for 1200 students and 40 instructors before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. After training she was designated the Outstanding Recruit of B Company, 31st Training Battalion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina by the Commandant of the Marine Corps Woman’s Reserve Schools. After training Stephens was assigned to Aviation Women's Reserve Squadron-19 Aviation Women's Reserve Group-1, United States Marine Corps, Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina as an aircraft mechanic. During World War Two the aviation components of all the air services asked for large numbers of women to serve in technical fields. The Marine Corps asked for 3,000 women to serve at Marine Corps Air Stations at Cherry Point, Edenton, Santa Barbara, El Toro, Parris Island, Mojave, El Centro, Quantico, Ewa, and at the Marine Corps Aviation Depot in Miramar. Stephens married Sgt. Ernest F. Glawitsch on June 8, 1945. Private First Class Sibyl S. Glawitsch was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps on November 28, 1945. Sibyl Stephens Glawitsch died in Madison, Lake, Ohio on July 7, 2002 she is buried in Lockhart, Texas. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
