I met Don Ross here in Seattle years ago and for a period of time his MOH was buried in his garden on his farm. My wife use to play on his farm when she was a kid. My Father in Law is a Pearl Harbor survivor and he and Don knew each other because they both lived here in the Seattle area. He lost it, and found it again. He had it gold plated after he found it. The dirt had discolored the finish. Do you have any idea where Capt. Bennion's MOH is located? I have seen pics of Adm. Kidd's but not Bennions. Kurt I heard a story years ago that Ross was a speaker at an OMSA Convention and he was walking thru the bourse wearing his MOH and his PH for 12/7 and the PH was in rough shape and the plastic inset was melted (Type 1 PH I think) and a member offered to trade him a new one for the one he was wearing - Ross accepted and he signed a business card of his attesting that this was his original PH. - If this was true someone left the convention a happy man!! Bill

Bill The member should have GIVEN the new Purple Heart to Ross. He was taken advantage of. Even worse that it was at an OMSA convention. $25 current PH for WW2 USN PH awarded to MOH recipient? OMSA leadership didn’t have a problem with this???
KASTAUFFER Posted December 16, 2025 #29 Posted December 16, 2025 It was at the 1991 OMSA convention in Seattle. What actually happened was a member walked up to Don Ross with a new Purple Heart for him, and Don took off his old one and gave it to the guy. It wasnt a trade, Kurt
