SA1794 Posted September 26, 2016 Share #1 Posted September 26, 2016 Direct from the family. The Ike jacket is a replacement (the family threw away the moth eaten original) but all the ribbons and brass are originals taken off before disposing of the jacket. Grouping included letters written to the family, original Unit citations, photos (including some from Bastogne, German propaganda, map of the 705th travels through Europe. Even a nice era wallet embroidered with the tank destroyer patch. I am honored to be the new caretaker of this group.

Phoenixmike Posted November 13, 2017 Share #4 Posted November 13, 2017 Very nice grouping. My great uncle was a medic in the 705th. I saw your post and it has me wondering something. I see the DUI's on the collar belong to the 776th TD Bn. When I received some of my great uncle's items from his WW2 collection there was a 776th DUI with them. I can't figure it out but there must have been some connection between the two. There isn't anyone left in the family that could provide the answer. Anyone that can help? Geoff Posted November 14, 2017 Share #5 Posted November 14, 2017 Great Tank Destroyer group. Thank you for sharing it with the forum. Phoenixmike...to answer the question about the 776th TD battalion DIs in both of your groups...in July 1945 both the 705th and 776th TDs were assigned to the 5th TD Group as the US Army in Europe was reorganized after the fighting in Europe ended. Most of the 776th TD personnel had enough points to rotate home, while most of the officers and enlisted personnel in the 705th were below the minimum points needed. As a result many in the 705th were transferred to the 776th to fulfill their remaining service time. So it makes sense to see 776th DIs with the effects of 705th TD veterans who served through the end of the war.
