5thrangerson Posted August 20, 2016 #1 Posted August 20, 2016 This scabbard was in an estate lot of an AAF veteran along with his uniform, a near mint helmet liner and a few other odds n ends. Is this a military or a civilian scabbard ? I can not find any marks on it. Thanks for any help anyone might be able to give me. Dave
doyler Posted August 20, 2016 #2 Posted August 20, 2016 Is there a date on it near the opening? Looks like a scabbard for the O3 springfield. There was one for the Krag rifle as well

Would be Cav right, they carried the Krag Jorgensen Carbine not the long arm Krag.
5thrangerson Posted August 20, 2016 Author #4 Posted August 20, 2016 I can't see any marks on the thing anywhere, dates or maker marks.
cavsaddle Posted August 20, 2016 #5 Posted August 20, 2016 This does not appear to be a military scabbard. It does slightly resemble the russet Krag scabbard but the attaching straps on the russet Krag scabbard were attached to the scabbard by passing through leather loops attached by brass rivets on the top strap and passed through an iron ring for the lower strap, not slots cut into the body of the scabbard, It also lacks the tooling around the mouth of the scabbard, Attached is a photo of a Rock Island Arsenal manufactured Krag scabbard. Best George

cavsaddle Posted August 21, 2016 #7 Posted August 21, 2016 It is always possible that a Krag carbine may have been carried in this scabbard. But not for military use. If a Krag carbine was carried in it the would probably be impressions in the leather. One where the bolt would sit and another where the box magazine would have stretched the leather. These have always been present on any Krag scabbard I have ever seen. Both the Krag rifle and carbine were popular hunting weapons when sold off as surplus. This scabbard could very well have been used for that purpose but never issued by the military. Best George.
5thrangerson Posted August 21, 2016 Author #8 Posted August 21, 2016 Thanks for all of your responses. Guess it will be looking for a new home. Dave

Tolzer Posted September 9, 2024 #11 Posted September 9, 2024 Thought that I would bring this discussion up from the past. I have had this one for many years (see images). I still have the description tag that reads: " Experimental Krag Carbine Scabbard. The need for a carbine scabbard following its early 1894, 1895 development called for several manufacturing facilities to design and produce prototypes type carbine scabbards for the Krag Carbine. This brown scabbard numbered 63 is one of them. It is complete with the two straps with roller buckles to mount it to the McClelland saddle. The production number 63 can be found below the rear strap "D" ring. There are no other markings. Rock Island Arsenal was the chosen manufactureur of the model 96 Krag carbine scabbard." Thoughts?
