earlymb Posted August 12, 2016 Share #1 Posted August 12, 2016 I came across this photo on another forum. The lieutenant on the left is wearing a British P37 webbing holster and pistol ammo pouch, and possibly a P37 belt too while the man on the right wears a M1917 holster (I think) that he somehow attached to a M8A1 scabbard with M3 knife. I think that the man with the British webbing somehow got it un-official, or was British P37 webbing sometimes issued to US troops?

ComputerChris Posted August 12, 2016 Share #3 Posted August 12, 2016 Does anyone know who the soldiers are? I'm interested in learning about anything with the 83rd Div.
earlymb Posted August 12, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted August 12, 2016 I don't know, there was no more information with the photo. I also have no clue why it appears twice in my first post.
Andrew Posted August 12, 2016 Share #5 Posted August 12, 2016 Maybe the guy on the left won the British pistol set in a poker game!
nix284 Posted August 12, 2016 Share #6 Posted August 12, 2016 The German Officer appears to be missing his left hand and three fingers from his right.
Ronnie Posted August 12, 2016 Share #7 Posted August 12, 2016 I have an airborne book here somewhere that has a photo of a US paratrooper wearing his M42 uniform and walking thru a town in France wearing the British canvas holster. The canvas held up better than the US leather holster. It is a cool picture but would be a miracle for me to find it. Ronnie
David D Posted August 12, 2016 Share #8 Posted August 12, 2016 Ronnie, I'm guessing you're talking about this trooper from the 551st? Quite the smooth dude
Ronnie Posted August 13, 2016 Share #9 Posted August 13, 2016 No David that isn't it....and I don't see a canvas holster either. Am I missing it? Ronnie
David D Posted August 13, 2016 Share #10 Posted August 13, 2016 Ronnie, I thought on his left side it was one by the snap. But looking more closely I believe it's just a ring. My bad Dave
Ronnie Posted August 13, 2016 Share #11 Posted August 13, 2016 Oh yeah I see what you're talking about. I think it's a ring too. Ronnie
Philipp Baughman Posted August 13, 2016 Share #12 Posted August 13, 2016 Don't intend to hijack, but is this a M1 Thompson with mafia style pistol grip under the barrel? Never seen this done with an M1. I have always thought those grips weren't used by Army troops. Have only heard about those in use with Marines. ccyooper Posted August 19, 2016 Share #14 Posted August 19, 2016 If you look in DeTrez book First Airborne Task Force you we see several pictures of Thompsons in several configurations. With and without stocks, modifications, etc. Unlike the uniformity of the paratoopers in the north, the troops down south were truly "Hollywood " in appearance. They modified and painted just about everything, like the trooper above.
