anton67 Posted August 11, 2016 Share #1 Posted August 11, 2016 Hi, I picked up this USN flight helmet. I haven't received it in the mail yet. Can anyone tell me what I have here? Thoughts are appreciated.

Fly USMC Posted August 11, 2016 Share #3 Posted August 11, 2016 Boom Mike may indicate rotary wing use (helicopters), or smaller prop driven fixed wing such as trainers
TLeo Posted August 11, 2016 Share #4 Posted August 11, 2016 APH-5 with leather tabs for oxygen mask which are often missing. The visor locking knob has been replaced with a modern one. I would say late 50s early 60s helmet by the use of reflective tape.
northcoastaero Posted August 11, 2016 Share #5 Posted August 11, 2016 This USN APH-5 helmet could also have been used in aircraft such as the AD Skyraider and S2F Tracker. I am guessing that the replacement twist type visor lock knob was introduced during the early 1960s. Some jet fighters and attack aircraft were still using boom microphones during this time frame. anton67 Posted August 12, 2016 Author Share #6 Posted August 12, 2016 Thank you for your help. Although I mostly collect M1s I seem to keep running into these flight helmets.
