bryang Posted August 11, 2016 Share #1 Posted August 11, 2016 My wife surprised me today with this awesome First World War trench art group. One pretty huge artillery shell casing cut down and painstakingly etched, as well as three smaller shells, each also etched. Each shell appears to be stamped 1917 On the large shell case is etched: "FRANCE" on one side and "1918" on the other. One smaller shell is etched with: "Mesves 1918" as well as a decorative flower. My initial research indicated that Mesves-sur-Loire was the sight of huge American hospital during WW1 One shell is etched with: "Rimaucourt 1918" with a decorative flower. Rimaucourt was also a location of an American hospital The third shell is etched with: "Verdun 1918" also with a decorative flower. Verdun needs little explanation I suppose. I wish I knew who brought these back, however I'm extremely pleased to have this as a set. The first time I've seen a set like this, also its my first World War One trench art piece. Brian Keith Posted August 17, 2016 Share #8 Posted August 17, 2016 Excellent stuff! I love Trench Art! Thanks for posting it. I think the large one is a German gun, originally from a battleship, then turned into a very large Field Artillery gun. BKW
