Civil war Percussion Hammer

Recommended Posts

I purchased a large bunch of ammo and gun parts this week. One item was this hammer. It is marked with a P. It still has some colors to the case hardening on it. Is this Civil war era.

Thanks

Looks like an original hammer for the P1861 Springfield rifle. I'll have to double check in my musket references.

Pretty sure it's for the US Springfield "Trapdoor" rifle. There are several "models" of this really beautiful weapon, and iIdon't know if the hammer changed in any of them. Here's a website that might help. And there are other folks here on the Forum that are 'way more knowledgeable than I am.

It's for a percussion weapon and looks like my 1863 Springfield hammer, I've got a model 1873 & 1884 trapdoor and the hammers do not have the cup.
