kanemono Posted August 3, 2016 Share #1 Posted August 3, 2016 Here is a sterling silver cigarette box that was presented to Gordon and Francis Owens by Torpedo Squadron Four in August 1944. Here also are items that were in the box when I bought it. Dick

northcoastaero Posted August 3, 2016 Share #3 Posted August 3, 2016 Looks like VT-4 flew the Grumman TBF Avenger at this time. I found the following Air Group 4 website: http://www.airgroup4.com/torpedo.htm
pararaftanr2 Posted August 3, 2016 Share #4 Posted August 3, 2016 Hello kanemono, I saw your other post about these items in the "Groupings" section. Do you have any idea what, if any, connection there was between VT-4, which was stationed on the East Coast of the U.S. (while about to transition from TBD to TBF aircraft in August 1942), and Mr. Owens? Regards, Paul
pararaftanr2 Posted August 3, 2016 Share #5 Posted August 3, 2016 Correction, "Medals and Decorations", not "Groupings".
northcoastaero Posted August 4, 2016 Share #6 Posted August 4, 2016 Just found this link to the history of VT-4, etc.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VA-15_(U.S._Navy)
kanemono Posted August 4, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted August 4, 2016 Paul, I could not find any connection between VT-4, stationed on the East Coast of the U.S. and Owens stationed in Hawaii. However, there are five months of 1942 missing from the records on Ancestry. Owens could have been temporary transferred for training to the US East Coast and the box presented to he and his wife at that time. Dick
firefighter Posted August 4, 2016 Share #8 Posted August 4, 2016 Holy Smokes!!! Looks like a Black Widow Cross. Is it a wrapped brooch? I think the Cross may belong to this man, http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/rgowens.htm . I just noticed that his service number matches the one on the bracelet. AMAZING FIND!!!
