Johnson M1941 Posted July 24, 2016 Share #1 Posted July 24, 2016 I bought this haversack / knapsack off a friend of mine years back. I have left it hanging in my laundry room for years now. I have always wondered some things about it and I figured I would post on here and ask the experts 1) Is this a 1902 pattern Spanish American war haversack? 2) Is this correctly called a haversack or knapsack? 3) Originally, what was carried in this sack? 4) what do the markings mean? I understand the crossed rifles to be infantry but I don't know what the other markings mean. 5) I have not seen any others marked TEXAS before - does that make this item more rare or special? Thank you in advance!
Spathologist Posted August 17, 2016 Share #2 Posted August 17, 2016 The only thing I can offer is that the 2nd Texas Infantry was on Border duty before being folded into the 141st Infantry in 1917. I stand corrected: Company M of the 2nd Texas Infantry became Company L of the 143rd Infantry.
atb Posted August 18, 2016 Share #3 Posted August 18, 2016 And, soldier number 52 within his company. All of his items of equipment would have the number 52 marked on them. Mess gear and rations were carried in the haversack.
