According to Bruce Canfield's book on Combat Shotguns, the US supplied ~40,000 Model 870s to the S. Vietnamese starting in the mid-1960s. 870 riot guns were being supplied to US troops by the late 1960s and the USMC Mark I was developed in 1969.

I was at an OPEN HOUSE at a military airbase years ago, and they had some Remington 870's on display, and I remember seeing some with engravings of hunting scenes on the recievers, so they also used civillian shotguns as well as military contract.

870s were in our ship's armory (DD-978 1982) and I was a gunner's mate and one of my brother's friends in Vietnam L-3-5 1st Marine Division specifically told me about one battle on hilltop were they were using these which was 1968-9.

Kurt.
