Pbaczuk Posted June 27, 2016 Share #1 Posted June 27, 2016 Hi all; How prevalent were these M36 suspenders? And does the attached image of then Capt Winters show him wearing this type? Paul
Corpsman_1941 Posted June 27, 2016 Share #2 Posted June 27, 2016 Maybe it's some experimental type between M1939 and M1944... Just my idea.
Pbaczuk Posted June 27, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted June 27, 2016 They are 43 dated but tough to photograph.
Pbaczuk Posted June 27, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted June 27, 2016 On Capt Winter's suspenders, the stud that normally attaches the straps together on regular M36 suspenders is missing in this image.
TheGrayGhost Posted June 28, 2016 Share #5 Posted June 28, 2016 I don't think there is any doubt this is what he's wearing. You can clearly see the extra padding on his shoulders, it is obviously thicker than a standard m36 and it's not the usual felt pad. I know nothing about these, maybe a paratrooper only item? Pbaczuk Posted June 28, 2016 Author Share #9 Posted June 28, 2016 Thank you for your analysis. Maybe Winters was showing off the new M1943 issue? I don't think there is any doubt this is what he's wearing. You can clearly see the extra padding on his shoulders, it is obviously thicker than a standard m36 and it's not the usual felt pad. anelles Posted June 28, 2016 Share #10 Posted June 28, 2016 I know these have been discussed before, weren't they just the final variant of the M1936, unofficially refereed to as M1943 suspenders by collectors? That photo is great, I haven't seen these in use in too many period photos. I'm guessing their period of manufacture was fairly brief.
patches Posted June 28, 2016 Share #11 Posted June 28, 2016 I think this is the topic here anelles was referring too, or at least one of them. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/202512-1944-kit/
Pbaczuk Posted June 28, 2016 Author Share #12 Posted June 28, 2016 I refer to them as M36. This picture of Capt Winters wearing them is the only period pic I have seen so far of them in use in the war. I will have to look harder and spend time researching pics, especially airborne soldiers.
patches Posted June 29, 2016 Share #13 Posted June 29, 2016 Hey I just remembered, Peck wears these in Pork Chop Hill.
David D Posted June 29, 2016 Share #14 Posted June 29, 2016 Very interesting suspenders. I don't believe they are "M1943" suspenders.
Pbaczuk Posted June 29, 2016 Author Share #15 Posted June 29, 2016 Yes that type of suspender is also on the "Combat" series.
earlymb Posted June 29, 2016 Share #16 Posted June 29, 2016 I think Peck is in fact wearing M1943 suspenders, with the larger D-rings. The pair Pbaczuk shows seem to be the transitional M1936-type? I have a pair somewhere too.
