New Sub-Forum : Individual & Unit Portraits

We would like to let everyone know about a new section under the Ephemera & Photographs Section. It is titled Individual & Unit Portraits.

 

Here is a brief description from one of the Moderators, Brig, who helped get this section started:

 

 

Portrait provide a fantastic window into the history of an era, offering indisputable proof of the existence and wear of many uniforms, gear, insignias, and awards of an era. They serve as a fantastic reference to the collector, and offer a glimpse of the history behind the artifacts themselves. They are also often overlooked and under-appreciated in our hobby. Because of this, we have started this new subforum, specifically to showcase and discuss these fantastic images.

 

For the purpose of this subforum, let's discuss what fits into this category. Portraits can be on paper, cabinet card, tin types, RPPC, canvas, or other materials, and can be photos, paintings, or artistic drawings of a posed subject. The criteria of a portrait should meet one or more of the following:

 

-Studio portraits. They can be of the whole subject or a bust, and not limited to only one subject. It was not uncommon for multiple service members to go to a studio together and take images with one another.

 

-Yard long and other professional unit photos. These are often outside the studio. For unit photos, they should be quite intentionally posed, such as yard longs, or groups of troops in chairs (classic sit/kneel/bend formation). A group of several soldiers sitting around the smoke pit or conducting drill would not be considered a unit portrait, and is better suited for the parent Ephemera and Photo forum.

 

-Photos taken outside of a studio, by either a professional or amateur photograph, where the subject is quite deliberately posed to serve as a subject in a portrait fashion.

 

Personal photos, family photos, and other such that fall outside of these criteria should continue to be posted in the parent Ephemera photo.

 

Members are highly encouraged to post any information about portraits posted, including the history of the subject themselves, should the subject's identity be known

 

Moderators will continue to move preexisting topics of portraits into this subforum as we find them, so please feel free to PM us a link instead of starting a duplicate topic.
