Allan H. Posted May 23, 2016 Share #6 Posted May 23, 2016 It is indeed "repacked." Repacking a chute didn't require the same amount of inspection to the chute and shroud lines that packing a deployed chute. Allan
littlebuddy Posted May 23, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted May 23, 2016 Thankyou guys ! very much appreciated ! Also just to confirm one other detail , on the inside of the front cover it states the make as "fashion frocks " which I know as a contract for canopies the canopy pack is marked "Irvin" and the harness is marked "NAFI (national automotive fibres inc ) is this the norm ? Or have I bought a "Frankenstein " LB
pararaftanr2 Posted May 24, 2016 Share #8 Posted May 24, 2016 Hi Carl, If you look closely at the 1/16/46 entry in the log, it looks to me like it says the harness and pack were replaced on that date. They would have made no effort to match up manufacturers, as long as the parachute type was the same. Regards, Paul
WWII Parachutist Posted May 24, 2016 Share #9 Posted May 24, 2016 The "R" in the log book is not related to the stenciled marking on the pack. The marking on the pack stands for "Replaced," indicating the pack was replaced at that date. Packs were notorious for wearing out quickly and most assemblies in service for a good length time will have packs replaced. Standard practice is to mark packs on the web ripcord pin buffer inside the ripcord protector flap. If the harness is replaced, it is to be marked on the right hand chest area of the main lift web, on the inside. If you check your harness, it'll probably be there. The pack probably wore thin, most likely around the edges of the steel frame, which necessitated replacement. Harnesses were required to be replaced every 3 years, so if it was placed in service in 1943, it would have been about due in 1946. At the depot, they would have used whatever was on the top of the pile for replacement, leading to the variety of manufacturers you see there. littlebuddy Posted May 24, 2016 Author Share #10 Posted May 24, 2016 Thanks very much guys ! I was afraid that the "46" was a replacement date , would this affect its value at all ?
