So this statement is incorrect. This color change is most frequently seen on Unicor canteen covers but also on Reyes Industries canteen covers contracted in 1995. Also, I have this clearly genuine desert canteen pouch that I recently picked up on Ebay to prove desert canteen covers do exist (Albeit extremely rare). Notice from the pictures that it was contracted in 1982 around the same time a lot of 6 color desert camo uniforms were contracted and it even has a matching canteen that was made only 2 years prior. That and the verifiably real government contractor, Turner Thurston (whose name is mostly found on shotgun ammo pouches from the early 80s), with all the appropriate nomenclature is pretty hard to refute. Due to the extreme rarity of this pouch and the year it was contracted, it was most likely a test item and certainly never saw widespread issue. However, it does in fact exist. So making bold claims that OG106 is the only color ever contracted is simply incorrect. 1) You are 100% correct, but if you read the title of the post you would know that the time frame covered was from 1966 to 1976. The military specifications for the nylon water canteen cover (MIL-C-43742) were not changed. However, the material used to construct the nylon water canteen cover was. Interim Amendment 4 to MIL-C-7219F, the military specifications for CLOTH, DUCK, NYLON, changed the nylon cloth's color from OG-106 to CAMOUFLAGE GREEN 483 on 4 March 1991 (outside the scope of this original post's time frame). 2) Turner Thurston Manufacturing Corporation is not (and has never been) a United States government contractor. According to the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) the company has NEVER received a United States government contract, nor have they ever had a FSCM or CAGE Code assigned to them (which they would HAVE to have to do business with the United States government). Further, Turner Thurston is not a subsidiary or DBA of any past or present government contractor. As I have said before in a different post: the Turner Thurston nylon shotgun shell pouch is NOT a United States Government contracted item (further evidence is that the PII is fictional). Again, the DLA has never contracted the manufacture of a tan LC-2 1-quart water canteen cover for issuance to the United States military. Craig and I had our suspicions as to who Turner Thurston really was, but to date there is no solid evidence to link him to the fictional corporation (or to Hudgins Manufacturing Corporation and Sorrell Manufacturing Corporation).
