IS THIS CANTEEN CIVIL WAR, INDIAN WAR OR WHAT?

It appears to be an Indian War canteen, which were actually Civil War canteens with the bottom sling keeper removed and the two side keepers replaced with wire loops. It may have the name of the contractor on the spout.

It's a civil war smoothside canteen, but is missing the bottom loop for the canteen strap....

I suspect the previous post is right....it probably saw later service....1870s is a ballpark bet....

These canteens were used through the Spanish-American War and even into the early Twentieth Century before being replaced by the 1910 canteen. The majority were converted Civil War canteens but new ones are manufactured for the war with Spain. The Company of Military Historians published a nice article on them a while back.

If the flat spot on the back of the canteen appears to be an original, manufactured feature, as opposed to just being squashed, that would make it the 1902 model. Are the loops triangular or rectangular?

The model 1901 canteen was built with a concave side. I can not tell if the concave sides are dents or it was made that way.
