BC312 Posted May 9, 2016 #1 Posted May 9, 2016 I was wondering if there were more types of moral boosting troop entertainment radios other than the R-100, URR radio set. I remember there being a wooden version which someone on another forum copied and made their own set. Can anyone help.
med-dept Posted May 11, 2016 #3 Posted May 11, 2016 Here are some pictures of my original SSD2 for reference: Thanks, Ben.
BC312 Posted May 12, 2016 Author #4 Posted May 12, 2016 Thanks Ben for showing your radio, very nice bit of equipment you have there. It's a wonder I couldn't find it on the web as its been known as a 55D2 when it's actually a SSD2. Are these quite a common radio or hard to find.
med-dept Posted May 12, 2016 #5 Posted May 12, 2016 I would say that they're quite difficult to locate. I only know of a handful that are around, and most of them are in collectors' hands. Thanks, Ben.
BC312 Posted May 26, 2016 Author #6 Posted May 26, 2016 What were the rules and regulations of using these radios and private purchase radios in the barrack room and in combat situations ie during R&R. I have heard that some radio operators using their military sets did tune into broadcasts during a quiet moment depending if the radio was strong enough to pick it up. I was wondering if there was any reference to this. Anyone know.
Hue Miller Posted May 30, 2016 #7 Posted May 30, 2016 Nice radio. I have seen lots of morale radios, but this is a new one to me. On the second part, i recall reading about a German infantry column moving forward, oblivious of a U.S. armored column waiting in ambush, and some of the German troops were carrying playing radios.

BC312A Posted July 6, 2025 #15 Posted July 6, 2025 Thanks for the information which is leading to new pictures etc.
BC312A Posted July 23, 2025 #16 Posted July 23, 2025 Thought they were very rare but a lot are about. Still looking for a couple of measurements to get the front panel correct an the angle measurements of the top of the set where the square dial is, if any one could help out, that would be great.
BC312A Posted August 4, 2025 #17 Posted August 4, 2025 With the only sizes i have width depth and height plus a bit of scaling with photos i managed to come up with prototype 1. Not made in the best wood but good enough for a test run to get the feel of construction, there may be a few sizes that need correcting but near on
BC312A Posted September 12, 2025 #18 Posted September 12, 2025 Anyone know who has such a radio who could help with measurements?.
