Jumpin Jack Posted May 3, 2016 Share #2 Posted May 3, 2016 The first parachute is what is called a "Pilot Chute" that was designed to open upon activation of the main chute to drag the main chute out and away to be opened. As for the other, I have absolutely no idea. Jack

northcoastaero Posted May 4, 2016 Share #5 Posted May 4, 2016 The pilot chute may be known as a spider type pilot chute because of the design. The book The Parachute Manual Volume 1 (not volume 2) by Dan Poynter should have the part number listed and the parachute assemblies that it was associated with. WWII Parachutist Posted May 5, 2016 Share #7 Posted May 5, 2016 The pilot chute may be known as a spider type pilot chute because of the design. Correct, this is the spider type pilot chute. The 046208 pilot chute was designed in 1922 and used throughout the end of WWII. It began to be replaced in 1942 with the 69310, which was designed by the navy and was significantly cheaper. Your type could be used on any assembly which employed a pilot chute, with the exception of the B-8 through B-10 series back types.
