phantomfixer Posted April 22, 2016 Share #3 Posted April 22, 2016 nice piece...what happened to the B17? Is the group marking complete looks to be from 3rd Div but what group, or is it an incomplete marking, or maybe a letter in the white box? regardless...nice tag
ram957 Posted April 22, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted April 22, 2016 The markings appear to be whited out by the censors...The ship is from the 301st BG 419th BS..Shot down by fighters on a mission to Regensburg on February 25, 1944...All of the crew bailed out except for tail gunner S/Sgt Warren C. Johnson who was KIA at his position . MACR 2597

northcoastaero Posted April 22, 2016 Share #6 Posted April 22, 2016 Nice data plate. 301bg.com has images of the crash site. I could not find any information about nose art for 42-30310. http://www.301bg.com/42-30310_crash_site.cfm
Bagman Posted April 22, 2016 Share #7 Posted April 22, 2016 Just for the record, this '17 was from the 15th AF out of southern climes. Markings on camo'd A/c of the 301st seemed to have been a white square with a black "Y". It was a rugged war coming from "sunny" Italy, too. The mission on which she was lost was probably part of "Big Week" against the German aircraft industry , of which Regensburg was an important part. Respectfully submitted, Bagman
