Francis Barnard - US Hospital Train Nurse

Francis Barnard turned 100 years old yesterday. I had the honor of meeting her two weeks ago today at the symposium on military nurses. She is still a fireball at her age!

I have never heard of these hospital train nurses. I found it very interesting that they would start on the east coast driving patients from the ETO across the country. Once they got to the west coast, they would pick up more patients from the PTO and drive back across the country.

As she stated, it was very hard work that these unsung heroes did taking care of their patients as they were transported back home.

The below link has a good article about hospital trains in the ETO during WWII. I recently read an article about hospital trains in post war Germany and they ran through the mid 1960's (last link)
