renfield Posted April 13, 2016 Share #1 Posted April 13, 2016 I got a large negative of a known picture of 2 of the 3 B-17s Israel acquired in 1948. These planes actually bombed Cairo Egypt on their flight to their home bases in Israel. Most likely the last time a B-17 was used in combat. When Israel became a state in 1948 they had a hand full of ME 109s and 3 B-17s. They were able to fend off attacks from their Arab "neighbors" and the rest is history. Garandomatic Posted April 13, 2016 Share #2 Posted April 13, 2016 Now, I knew they had the 109s, but how about that... B-17s!
northcoastaero Posted April 14, 2016 Share #3 Posted April 14, 2016 According to some of my reference materials, the three B-17G acft. were retired shortly after the 1956 Suez War when they bomber Gaza. Aircraft 1601, 1602, and ?. The B-17s were used in the maritime role after 1949 and had radar installed under the nose. Hope this helps.
Alec Posted April 14, 2016 Share #4 Posted April 14, 2016 The 109s were dismantled and smuggled into Israel listed as tractors on the crates.
