hhbooker2 Posted September 6, 2008 Share #1 Posted September 6, 2008 "GREETINGS & SALUTATIONS!" Ever wonder what the uniforms worn by enlistedmen and officers between 1861 to 1865 in the United States Navy during the War Between the States (U.S.Civil War) really looked like way back then? Here we start with a short jacket worn by seamen, it maybe have been used as early as 1841 or earlier? There are a few old photographs during the 1860s with old-salts still in possession of one of these "monkey jackets." sigsaye Posted September 7, 2008 Share #4 Posted September 7, 2008 Summer white cotton jumper. These are out standing uniforms. I have seen them up close in person. the thing to remember with these uniforms is that they are NOT the norm for the Civil War era Sailor. The uniform he wore at that time were plain without decoration. The uniforms with the "Fancy Work" were reserved for liberty ashore and as that final going home uniform. That is why so many of them survive, they were worn home and put away. The jacket was designed and intended to be worn un buttoned. it was intended to dress up what ever uniform it was being worn with. There were other short jackets that were built a bit differently that are refered to as "P-Jackets" that were worn for warmth. this jacket was intended to be worn over the white frock (jumper in modern times). It was however also eventually worn with the blue uniform. Steve Hesson
