aerialbridge Posted April 10, 2016 #26 Posted April 10, 2016 Kong is King in my book. Glad he made it home and hope he had a long life with the best dog chow and lots of squirrels to chase. Thanks for sharing that group to man's best friend. http://www.mcu.usmc.mil/historydivision/pages/frequently_requested/War-Dogs.aspx
Eric Queen Posted October 11, 2017 Author #27 Posted October 11, 2017 A friend of mine was recently at the National Archives and was able to scan KONG's service record book for me so I thought I would resurrect this thread and show a couple images.
Eric Queen Posted October 11, 2017 Author #30 Posted October 11, 2017 And the best part, KONG was an IWO JIMA combat vet
mes Posted October 11, 2017 #31 Posted October 11, 2017 I've seen a ton of SRB's but never a war dog's service record book. So very cool. thank for posting it Mark
GMPETE Posted October 11, 2017 #32 Posted October 11, 2017 Fantastic group. I Loved seeing this and missed it first time around. I did not know that any of these dogs were returned to their owners, and am also surprised the owners received as much information as they did after 'enlisting' their pets. Truly wonderful. Thanks for posting.
bellasilva Posted October 12, 2017 #35 Posted October 12, 2017 That's great! My heart sank when I read an earlier post with a letter that included that the Marine Corps felt the training Kong received made him too dangerous to release to a private home. Like, really? I donate my dog to the war effort and now you're telling me I can't have him back because he's a lean mean Gyrene? Only at the end did I see the section that says "If you DEMAND to have him back, etc. etc." Probably the coolest paper group I've ever seen
Eric Queen Posted October 12, 2017 Author #36 Posted October 12, 2017 Kong did survive the war and the owner did demand to have him back. This was stapled inside the service book.
squidney86 Posted October 13, 2017 #37 Posted October 13, 2017 This is quite a grouping. I have never seen anything like it! Im glad to see Kong was able to live out his post-service life with his owner. Sydney
cw1979 Posted October 15, 2017 #38 Posted October 15, 2017 That's great! Only at the end did I see the section that says "If you DEMAND to have him back, etc. etc." Probably the coolest paper group I've ever seen Boiler plate legal document to assist in limiting government liability if one of these dogs attacked someone and the owner blamed the military training they had received.
American Heritage Posted November 1, 2017 #39 Posted November 1, 2017 I LOVE THIS. USMC War Dog stuff is the absolute coolest. Semper Fi
Eric Queen Posted May 27, 2022 Author #40 Posted May 27, 2022 A little more info about Tanner and who he affectionately referred to as "BlitzKong"
