When I found the helmet, it had zero finish to it, was sanded smooth, and painted silver, brushed paint...the silver was starting to show rust bleed through...but it is a FS FB with original chin straps having said that, I think the chin straps are period replaced? Due to the sewing style, and I could be wrong... I media blasted the helmet with baking soda, primed it, and used cork from Murray, I might have went heavy handed on this one, but turned out better than sawdust... plan to do a few more helmets with zero finish and no provenance...
