Maastricht First Liberated City of Holland Souvenir Ceramic Plate

Recommended Posts

I've had this plate on my wall for a few years now, and thought I would share. There quite a few of these plates out there, so it may not be valuable, but it's appealing to the eye. The plate reads: "Bevrijding van Maastricht Door de Amerikanen 14 Sept. 1944". The plates were made in Maastricht to commemorate their liberation by Allied forces in 1944. In the foreground is a severely damaged bridge over the Maas River.

I have a few of those plates and they all have the words 'The first liberated city of Holland' on it. They are very common and not that valuable.

The bridge on the foreground is the Sint Servaasbridge, which was destroyed when the Germans invaded in 1940 and again in 1944 when the Americans came.

It's my understanding that the city of Maastricht still remembers the liberation and America's participation quite fondly. The composer Andre Rieu is from Maastricht, and composed this song in memory of the event...
