johnny12550 Posted March 28, 2016 #1 Posted March 28, 2016 Found this cigarette case on the net. It is named to Lt. William W. Warlick who served during WWII on several ships and was Captain of the USS Massachusetts during the war. He was given this case by the captain of the S.S. SHU TUNG, whick operated on the Yangtze river in China. Obviously Warlick served in China during the 20s. It is unknown what assitance he provides this steamer that the Captain awarded him this sterling case. My question is if there might be any listing which would show if he may have served on a gunboat on the Yangtze during that time. I have searched and only found info on his WW2 service, but nothing comes up on his service in China
Wharfmaster Posted March 28, 2016 #2 Posted March 28, 2016 Very nice case. The 1 March 1919 US Navy Directory shows him as a LCDR aboard USS Chester. Wharf
firefighter Posted March 28, 2016 #4 Posted March 28, 2016 Great looking case only found this. Directory of Naval officers 1938: Warlick, William W, comdr. Harvard Univ, Cambridge, Mass. conn ROTCU
johnny12550 Posted March 29, 2016 Author #5 Posted March 29, 2016 I think I found his boat. I found on the net where it mentioned that the S.S. Shu Tung met with the USS Palos. A search of the USS Palos and the name Warlick, resulted in his name being mentioned in a book called Gunboat on the Yangtze: The Diary of Captain Glenn F. Howell of the USS Palos
stbryson Posted April 7, 2016 #6 Posted April 7, 2016 Hello, From page 154, Gunboat on the Yangtze: The Diary of Captain Glenn F. Howell of the USS Palos, 1920-1921: "September 7, 1921 - Chengtu. There was waiting for me at the Post Office a telegram containing grand news from Julian. There have arrived at Chungking my relief, Lieutenant Commander Ralph Sampson, the son of Admiral Sampson of Spanish War fame, and Lieutenant Warlich, Julian's relief. Doctor Carll has been detached and ordered to the Philippines. The Monocacy is due to arrive at Chungking on the twelfth. The Palos will then proceed to Shanghai under my command. Upon arrival ther, Julian and I will turn the craft over to Sampson and Warlich, and then - India, Egypt, Europe, and home. Will I return to Chungking without delay? I'll say I will." Take care, Steve Bryson
johnny12550 Posted April 7, 2016 Author #7 Posted April 7, 2016 Hi Steve, Thanks for posting the info you found. I didn't even think of altering the name a bit to find further information on him. I'm still trying to find out what he did for the SHUTUNG that he was awarded the cigarette case. I guess I'll never find out.
Bob Hudson Posted April 7, 2016 #8 Posted April 7, 2016 . Under fire: Turns out his was Navy enlisted before getting selected for the academy:
johnny12550 Posted April 7, 2016 Author #9 Posted April 7, 2016 Bob, Thanks for posting the information. I had read about the sniper fire, but did not have the pis of him in formation or the group shot. I actually found a pic from his academy year book when he graduated. I'll post it when I get home
