SARGE Posted March 29, 2016 Share #51 Posted March 29, 2016 Not a family member, just a non-collector friend. Original problem was that knees, hips and shoulders did not react to brain requests. Could not move legs or arms although could be moved by outside manipulation. He could move his feet and arms from the elbows so could feed himself. He awoke Saturday morning with some but incomplete use of his arms and legs. By yesterday his physical therapist had him up to sitting on the edge of the bed and feet moving on the floor, today's goal is for him to stand with assistance. He still lacks fine muscle control, very difficult to type or even talk clearly. Updates when available. He says to thank everyone for their prayers. Many thanks for the update. We are all awaiting Gary's full recovery. George

rldarmstr Posted April 7, 2016 Share #56 Posted April 7, 2016 I have been following this thread because it follows a condition my mother had a few years ago. I am no doctor and I do not claim that her condition was exactly the same but for what it's worth I'm passing this information along. When my mother was in her 80's she was quite able. She didn't use a walker or a cane. Gradually however, she stared to loose feeling in her fingers, then in her feet. This progressed to the point where she used a cane, then a walker, and finally even the walker didn't really help. She lost almost all lower body muscle control. She couldn't hold a glass or cup without help. We, of course, took her to the family doctor and consulted specialists all of whom attributed her condition to 'nerve deterioration' due to her advanced age. One of the medications she was taking at the time was for blood pressure. For whatever reason she decided to stop using it. I don't remember if some one said something that led to stopping the medication or if they may have read something in a magazine but two weeks after stopping the blood pressure medicine her feeling was back in hands and feet and she was pretty much back to normal. None of the doctors ever suggested changing her medicine or indicated that there could be negative symptoms attributed to the use of any of her medications. The point I'm making here is to not take anything for granted. Ask the questions two or three times if necessary. Doctors or only people. They sometimes need a little help themselves. My mother went from being almost bed ridden to living a normal active (for an 80+) life all because of the medicine she was taking.
SARGE Posted April 9, 2016 Share #57 Posted April 9, 2016 Update: Gary continues to improve and now has some access to his computer. He will return when he is ready and we will all continue to play nice and follow the rules (coloring inside the lines as I explain to my wife) while he is gone. If anyone needs anything while Gary is gone do not hesitate to contact me. George

bayonetman Posted April 19, 2016 Author Share #60 Posted April 19, 2016 Gentlemen (and the Ladies also), I can't say how much I appreciate all of the comments that have been posted. I do not deserve the praise, although I do appreciate the good will and wishes. I did not realize how many e-friends I had, and it humbles me greatly to receive all of your wishes for my recovery. I am back home after a tour of two hospitals and a nursing home. No one yet has been able to determine what caused my loss of motor control and joint lockup. The "best guess" is that it was an autoimmune reaction to a cortisone based injection in my knees as I have fairly severe osteoarthritis in both knees and had just had shots of a new cortisone mixture. I am still being tested and will see a rheumatologist in the near future. I have recovered most of my motor control, but both knees are still quite bad and very painful. I can walk a few steps using a walker for balance, but it is still painful even when I am just sitting. Not quite bedridden, but not able to get up and do much yet either. However, it is slowly improving and I hope to be able to do more before too long. Again, thanks for all the good wishes. I hope to feel well enough to begin commenting again soon. Also thanks to Sarge for watching the Section for me.
