Yep, Philippine Division

Captain Nick Golla Co E 57th Infantry (PS).

Must of been RIFed post war, perhaps staying on for years as an NCO, and again received a commission, looks like another look up for the Officer Register.

No dice on the Registry, checked the one as 1 January 1956, must of been USAR when he was recommissioned.

The explanation I have heard as to why officers normally don't wear the badges is because they are expected to be proficient in their assigned weapons, so a qualification badge is seen as being redundant. Kind of like the logic behind why officers aren't awarded the Good Conduct Medal, that is that the conduct the medal recognizes is the minimum expected of all officers so there is no need to give them a medal for it.

The example is set at the very top - Army Chief of Staff Douglas MacArthur. I have never been clear as to whether these particular badges were Marine Corps only or also awarded by the Army.

Leslie Groves as a Captain wearing the Marine Corps style badges and later as a Lieutenant General in charge of the Manhattan Project wearing an Expert badge with multiple qualification bars. A closeup of the bars is also included. Note that he is wearing two each of the Rifle-A and Pistol-D bars.

How about a warrant officer? CWO Donald M. Aspden earned a Silver Star as a PFC in WWI and later served as Assistant G-1 of the 77th Division in WWII.

Some great contributions SS.

This one here wears the Airplane Observer Badge, with the U.S. in the center of the circle, at first we thought it was the Aircrewman Badge, but no way on that one right, that one came out in WWII.

Signal Corps Second Lieutenant after his OCS commissioning in September 1966. Notice he is not wearing the ribbon to the National Defense Service Medal.

Is this a colorized one? If not. Never seen a Center School patch with a White Border before, that makes it quite a rare and unique variant.

BG Kendall J. Fielder with badge and ladder when in the U.S. Army Pacific. Fielder was on Gen Short's Staff at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor, he's seen in the movie Tora Tora Tora! In the movie, He's the one who tells Short about the Hawaii National Park and the local Wildlife Preservation Society, and that they wont let the Army put up that Radar site on a hill that's ideal
