Help ID this uniform

I need help with dating this photo. I know my ancestor served in the Army from 1870 to 1875 in the 6th Inf. Regt. After looking at reference books I believe he is wearing the 1868-1872 pattern uniform with a M1872 belt as Chris Fischer points out. This would make the picture date after 1872. There was probably a wear-out period for the older uniform. Since he is wearing corporal stripes, which is what he was discharged as, this photo could have been taken near the end of his enlistment in 1875. His name is James M. Sligar.

 

I am close or totally wrong? Sorry for the poor quality of the photo.
