KASTAUFFER Posted September 2, 2008 Share #1 Posted September 2, 2008 Hello All I had posted Pics of this group in on the " other forum" a few years ago before the USMF started, but I thought it should be here as well. RM3/c Dennis was a Radioman on a SBD Dauntless dive bomber who served with VS-6 ( Scouting Squadron Six ) on the USS Enterprise and was killed during the very 1st carrier raid of the war against the Japanese. The raid took place at the Marshall Islands on February 1, 1942 . He was also in the air during the Pearl Harbor attack , and his plane was hit by friendly fire causing his plane to make an emergency landing at Ewa . In December 1943, a Destroyer Escort ( DE-405 ) was launched in tribute to him. The porttrait photo taken shortly after he enlisted
KASTAUFFER Posted September 2, 2008 Author Share #2 Posted September 2, 2008 His Air medal has a 2 piece planchet with a slot brooch, which is a scarce late USN contract. His Type I PH was awarded in 1943 .

KASTAUFFER Posted September 2, 2008 Author Share #21 Posted September 2, 2008 This last photo really sums up the sacrifice Otis made for this country . It is a memorial that his family had erected in his memory at the local cemetary . His remains were never recovered . Reports indicate that his plane exploded during a dive bombing attack after they had released their bomb. His plane was caught in the resulting explosion .
