Wailuna Posted September 2, 2008 Share #5 Posted September 2, 2008 ...measure in inches? If you mean the number of inches from the shoulder seam to the top of the chevron, it depended on length of the individual soldier's arm. The rule for chevron placement was 1/2 the distance from the shoulder seam to the elbow (ref. paragraph 55d, AR 600-40, ed. 31 March 1944). Pack Rat Posted September 17, 2008 Share #6 Posted September 17, 2008 If you mean the number of inches from the shoulder seam to the top of the chevron, it depended on length of the individual soldier's arm. The rule for chevron placement was 1/2 the distance from the shoulder seam to the elbow (ref. paragraph 55d, AR 600-40, ed. 31 March 1944). I read something about the dime /dollar rule. As a rule of thumb: SSI's should be placed a dime's length down from the shoulder seam and then the rank insigna down a dollars width down from the bottom of the SSI to the top of the rank crest. I don't know how valied this rule is or how it will help our Italian friend, but I thought I'd throw that out there. -D
