gwb123 Posted October 3, 2016 Share #54 Posted October 3, 2016 Baseball was not always a formal thing... these are photos from my Father's USMC photo album during the Korean War. I believe the one with the building in the background is probably Cherry Point MCAS, NC. That dark colored car in the background might be my Dad's, based on other photos. patches Posted October 3, 2016 Share #55 Posted October 3, 2016 Here's a real nice page on Baseball during the War Between the States. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/articles/aubrecht2004b.shtml An 8th Air Force team in England in the summer of 1943, note the 8th AF patches. And a Ballgame on board a Flat Top WWII, CV unknown unfortunately. Two from WWI. And this fantastic one, an Indian Soldier tries his hand at Baseball, unknown Black unit, unknown date in India, Indian soldier may be of the Indian Army Service Corps. You know what fascinating about all this is that during WWII there was only one other county apart from, say Canada and some Latin American countries, that played the game and loved to play it. And that was our enemy Japan. Japanese Troops in China late 30s.

patches Posted October 4, 2016 Share #58 Posted October 4, 2016 After posting that foto of Japanese troops playing ball got me thinking. Does anybody know the doings in the Occupation Period in Japan Vis a Vis Baseball between U.S. Divisional Teams and Japanese Teams, even in the Korean War 50s? 67Rally Posted October 4, 2016 Author Share #59 Posted October 4, 2016 -War-Ship.jpg And a Ballgame on board a Flat Top WWII, CV unknown unfortunately. That is a great photo of the game on the flight deck. How about a make-shift batting cage on the starboard quarter of a battlewagon? I have several impromptu baseball shots in my growing collection. One of my favorites is this one of two doughboys having a catch alongside a European (French, perhaps?) hospital train:
uniformcollector Posted October 10, 2016 Share #61 Posted October 10, 2016 I'm not sure how well this fits in to the topic as it isn't a jersey, but it is one of my favorite uniforms I own. It was worn by Seaman Second Class Stan "The Man" Musial; one of the greatest players of all time. During the war, he played on his base's eight team league. uniformcollector Posted October 10, 2016 Share #64 Posted October 10, 2016 Absolutely, this fits! Are Stan's dress whites in your collection? They are. Originally, they were sold off from the family via auction to a sports artist and I was lucky enough to get them from him. I've always been interested in his amazing career (1,815 hits at home and 1,815 hits away!)

Dick That is a fantastic photo. The mix of collared and non-collared jerseys along with the stovepipe caps is a nice glimpse into the past. The photo almost looks like a sepia-toned current image of guys wearing reproduction uniforms - it is such a clear and crisp image!! Thanks for sharing! rustywings Posted October 12, 2016 Share #67 Posted October 12, 2016 Terrific thread! Thanks for all of the neat images posted above... Here's a 1943 dated 5.5 inch wide felt patch from Hamilton Army Air Field, near Novato, at the north end of the San Francisco Bay. gitana Posted October 13, 2016 Share #69 Posted October 13, 2016 I got to talk to one of the guys who played on the 116th Regiment team that won the ETO World Series. He later landed as a Sgt. on D-Day with the 116th. During our conversation I tried to pull out stories of the boats and the beaches, but he kept veering back to baseball. To him, D-Day was something he had to endure, but winning that 'world' series was something he remained truly proud of, even as an old man. I missed out on this 116TH Infantry Regiment Engineer Group uniform a few years ago (I forgot to set up my snipe) and it sold for well below what my max bid would have been.
