pouch.. supposedly WW2 Seabee used but what is it?

I have been offered this pouch, but I have not a clue what it is.

Supposedly is from WW2 and came from a Seabee's estate.

You can see him in the photo with the faces covered.

 

What is this thing? Is it WW2? I've never seen one like it.

Yes, a late .30 Carbine ammunition pouch intended for the 30 round magazines.

 

It appears to have been dyed blue or black?

I believe they are just terrible photos.. I think it's a dingy OD green.

Rusty you are right! Apparently it is "black" ?

 

so this was purchased from a WW2 Seabee vet.. why black?

That pouch was not used in WW2. First came out in 1947 or 48.

 

JQMD did make these pouches in 1945. The 1949 and later dated ones are more often seen but are still not common pouches.
