patches Posted April 20, 2016 Share #76 Posted April 20, 2016 Name probably Smith, Smitty of course being a common nickname for guys named Smith, even girls as there were three battalions of the 7th Cav in the 1st Cav Div, 1,2, and 5 a search might be hard due to the common surname, but Lemme Check. patches Posted April 20, 2016 Share #77 Posted April 20, 2016 Found a few in all Battalions, so lets see. Using the 1967 date and taking into account he might of started tour sometime in 1966 and was not listed for whatever reason as being present in 1967, and 1968, as he might of started tour in 67 but is listed in the rosters as being present in 1968. Will omit Officer obvioulsly, as we'd see rank and BOS badges, this guy is more than likely wearing the subdued or even color EM sleeve ranks HHC 1/7th Cav Robert W. Smith E-4 68 William F Smith Jr E-4 67 And here's a real wingding, I'm copying it just how it's listed in Roster, no first name given, only nickname, he was in 65 so uncertain if he's the one, if it was 66 or 67 it might be in the running he's the one. patches Posted April 20, 2016 Share #80 Posted April 20, 2016 And last but not least the 5th Battalion 7th Cavalry. If anything, as this list is pretty conclusive, at least we have a comprehensive list of Smiths who served in the three Battalions of the 7th Cav 1966-1968 Now if that damned Viet Vet Data Base was still up, we could cross reference these names by race, and barring any ommision on the data base's part by not listing race, we would be able to narrow down search considerably. HHC 5/7th Cav William M. Smith (No Rank Or Date of Service Given) Jesse L. Smith (No Rank or Date Served Given) Milton L. Smith E-3 67 Richard W. Smith E-3 66 William J. 439th Signal Battalion Posted April 20, 2016 Share #82 Posted April 20, 2016 Calm, cool, experienced, and collected. Starting at 4:06, notice the veteran E-5 in formation with the rest of the FNG's just getting to Camp Frenzell-Jones of the 199th Infantry Brigade in January of 1969. Most likely a multi-tour soldier, this E-5 wants to make sure that everyone sees his CIB and sergeant's insignia, which look to have been quickly affixed to his new jungle fatigues. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOICV7KiWEc
rd12 Posted April 21, 2016 Author Share #83 Posted April 21, 2016 This is Joseph Beauregard - he would go on to earn a second award CIB in Vietnam. Look at the Ranger Company scroll over the 25th ID SSI.

patches Posted May 1, 2016 Share #88 Posted May 1, 2016 A unusual application of a CIB on this 101 GIs Cowboy hat, on what looks to be member of a type of RECONDO unit, note the other GI with steel helmet on, got the metal Jump wings on oval too, Hmm not the best method of camouflage and concealment discipline right. Date unknown, probably sometime in late 67 into 1968 as he's got a Bird Cage Flash Suppressor M16.

patches Posted May 1, 2016 Share #91 Posted May 1, 2016 Great picture. Looks to have a color SSI and the other insignia subdued. Well that's Typical in the 101 throughout the period FF, even as late as 1972 where elmts of the 101 where still In Country, it's just the metal badges on the hat that are odd, eh maybe not, have seen it before, a color metal CIB on a boonie hat in combat, still it's a great photo and well deserved of being posted here in this topic.
