rd12 Posted September 18, 2018 Author Share #202 Posted September 18, 2018 Here is LTG Julian Ewell. This picture dates from 1966 when he was still a MG. Note he is wearing a miniature badge, and it is below his ribbon rack which is somewhat unusual by this date. Assignments of note include; Commanded 3rd Battalion, 501st PIR during Normany Invasion (1st combat jump) and Market Garden (2nd combat jump), Regimental Commander of 501st PIR during the Battle of the Bulge, Commanded 9th Infantry Regiment in Korea, 1953 (I assume this is where he earned 2nd CIB), Commanded 9th ID in Vietnam 1968-69. It was here he earned the nickname "Butcher of the Delta" for his reported obsessive focus on body counts. Vietnam controversy aside, a true American warrior who saw quite a bit of combat. rd12 Posted December 11, 2018 Author Share #212 Posted December 11, 2018 Here's a neat picture pulled from eBay, only marked "Esslingen, Germany 1948" on back. Nice custom ribbon rack and what looks like could be a bevo weave CIB.
patches Posted January 22, 2019 Share #213 Posted January 22, 2019 Think it's alright to add this one as there's no dedicated topic on this, one Major William E. Berzinec wearing a Mini EIB, photo taken in 1965 at Leavenworth C&GS College. Berzinec would go on to earn a CIB, earned it the hard way I regret to report. http://www.virtualwall.org/db/BerzinecWE01a.htm
63 RECON Posted March 20, 2019 Share #214 Posted March 20, 2019 found this online, sewn on CIB on i think beogams or cloud print? seanmc1114 Posted April 8, 2019 Share #215 Posted April 8, 2019 Two soldiers, probably instructors, receiving their CIB's at Fort Benning in July 1944. They probably transferred back stateside as instructors after early combat tours in either the South Pacific or North Africa//Sicily/Italy. 63 RECON Posted June 20, 2019 Share #216 Posted June 20, 2019 Actor Fess Parker, best known for his roles as Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone is pictured on a handshaking tour at Da Nang, Vietnam in 1970. Obviously the CIBs are not his as he has a bunch of badges on his jungle jacket, he was a marine in ww2. Of note is the Australian slouch hat hes carrying as well. patches Posted July 23, 2019 Share #217 Posted July 23, 2019 The CIB in Combat in Korea late summer of 1952, 40th Inf Div I believe, here the CIB is visible on at least two of the men.
patches Posted July 23, 2019 Share #218 Posted July 23, 2019 This is a screen shot from an Army video from the early 60s showing a drill sergeant candidate at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Note he is wearing the wool uniform which I have noticed seemed to be fairly common at Dix among DIs. Of special note to this topic is that he is wearing a full size metal Master Parachutist Badge but a miniature CIB which may have a star representing a second award. I can't make out whether the CIB is metal pin on or direct embroidered. It kind of looks like the latter to me but that would seem odd given that his Parachutist Badge is metal pin on. Any more Info on this Noncom Sean? I think he may be a Three Time awardee of the CIB.
seanmc1114 Posted July 23, 2019 Share #219 Posted July 23, 2019 Soldiers of the 199th Infantry Brigade in Vietnam sometime in 1969 or 1970. The lieutenant on the left is probably a platoon leader, so I assume the soldier on the right is a platoon sergeant, although it could be a company commander and field first sergeant. In any event, note the soldier on the right has a CIB with star on his boonie cap. It's hard to tell, but the CIB may be theater made.
seanmc1114 Posted August 13, 2019 Share #220 Posted August 13, 2019 Specialist 5 of the 1st Special Forces Group wearing both the CIB and CMB. Lack of National Defense Service Medal ribbon indicates this was probably 1964 or prior and he served in Vietnam, Laos or both.
patches Posted August 27, 2019 Share #221 Posted August 27, 2019 One more Mini CIB sighting, one Major Thomas F. Sheehan S-3 1st Battalion 74th Infantry 1956, an interesting one, can't find no more on him, ETO/MTO, got the Silver Star, two Big Hearts (Scarring on the face, maybe hit in the face one time?), and a Good Conduct Medal, maybe a WWII Battlefield Commission, Infantry?, Tanks? he's got 4 Stars on the Korean Service medal, But if Infantry in WWII why no 2nd Award CIB for Korea right. He's apparently out of the army by 1967, as he doesn't show in either the Active or Reserve O Registry for that year.
seanmc1114 Posted August 27, 2019 Share #222 Posted August 27, 2019 Screenshots from an awards ceremony on April 7, 1969 where General Charles Bonesteel, commanding general of the Eighth Army, presented the Combat Infantry Badge to a sergeant of the 2nd Battalion 23rd Infantry. The description of the footage states that this was the first award of the CIB in Korea since July 1969. Notice the variety of theater made SSI.
