Remington Model 11 Riot Gun Info?

Can anyone recommend a source for information on a specific serial number as to where it might've gone? I've got Canfield's excellent book on combat shotguns but the information is general in mature.

My dad had his Step-Dad's Remington and was curious on what exactly it was (Riot, Sports, Hunting, etc.) and he contacted Remington and by providing the Serial Number they figured out it was a Sports.

This inquiry comes up frequently on martial arms. The simple answer is that there is pretty much no source that will reliably provide this information on the Model 11 and most, but not all, other USGI small arms. The records simply do not exist.

 

One shot in the dark for you to try would be the serial number database maintained by Springfield Research Service. The SRS published 4 volumes of serial number data on a wide variety of USGI weapons. If the SRS has a record of your serial number one can ask for a letter that provides the details on the reference to the serial number. It is very much a needle-in-the-haystack type of proposition.
