Lee Ragan Posted January 18, 2016 Share #5 Posted January 18, 2016 Single stripes were for Lance Corporal. Privates wore no rank insignia at that time. It wasn't until 1920 that Army PFC's got the single stripe. These Lance Corporal ranks were temporary for 30 days, but could be extended for at least one more 30 day period. At that point the soldier would either be promoted to Corporal or resume the rank of Private (with no insignia). These dark blue chevrons were for wear on the lower sleeve of the light blue great coat while white chevrons were worn on other coats For more information check out LTC Emerson's book on Chevrons.
