VMI88 Posted January 17, 2016 Share #1 Posted January 17, 2016 I picked up an unusual set of parachute wings today; they're pinback but only about 1 5/16" wide. This is smaller than the standard wing but not small enough for the mess dress size. I think these might be cast because the edges seem to be rounded and there are a few flaws you can see under magnification. However, they're very well made and appear to have some age patina to them. It's tough to see in the photo but the word "Sterling" is stamped into the back of the canopy. Does anyone have any idea what these are? I doubt they're intended as a fake because of the non-standard size.
VMI88 Posted January 17, 2016 Author Share #2 Posted January 17, 2016 Here's a couple of shots showing the edges - sorry they're not the best quality.
SFMike Posted March 5, 2016 Share #3 Posted March 5, 2016 These are made and sold in all sizes for any use you like. Mostly vets use them as lapel pins, tie tacs, cap badges, whatever. A lot of pride of ownership goes into some of this stuff and some guys like to represent. Some genuine effort went into some of it.
VMI88 Posted March 16, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted March 16, 2016 I missed your response earlier - thanks!
VMI88 Posted May 7, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted May 7, 2018 I ran across this picture (from an eBay auction) on another thread and thought I'd post it here for reference: Note the small wings pinned to the front of the soldier's cap. The group was determined to be suspect, so it's impossible determine if these are the same small wings shown to the right of the picture.
