What is it? Helmet Plate Question, Indian Wars era SIlver 1st

Hi not sure exactly what this plate is, I believe it is for a helmet plate for a Indian Wars Era pith type helmet? It has a silver 1? also has a hole in the middle I am assuming was added later. Has three attachment points on the rear of the plate.

It's for an Model 1881 US Army Enlisted Man's Infantry Dress Helmet. These were worn for about 20 years in the late 19th Century. The "1" indicates 1st Infantry Regiment. The hole is probably the result of someone nailing it to a wall for display.

Looks like the shield is soldered on. May be the officers' model.

 

Indeed it is. I specifically looked for that when I looked at it the first time and still missed it! When you can't see the guns on the reverse, it's a two piece officer.
