robinb Posted January 8, 2016 Share #1 Posted January 8, 2016 This was sent home from Europe to Mrs. Albert Hershey in Newport, Oregon. I don't know what the GI sent, but the box is some kind of German shipping box. Any one recognize it's purpose? The address is on the bottom as are 4 added casters. The 5 round clip is there for scale.

robinb Posted January 8, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted January 8, 2016 So could it have been shipped home after WW1? I hadn't thought of that possibility.
doyler Posted January 8, 2016 Share #4 Posted January 8, 2016 I would think so. Odd as it sounds a friend found a WW1 german crate when in the army over in europe in the 1990s.Came out of an old house and he found it at a street sale.
R Michael Posted January 8, 2016 Share #5 Posted January 8, 2016 It is an ammunition box. Probably 9mm. There would have been a heavy piece of cardboard on the inside of the lid with a label denoting caliber etc. Mike
WaA257 Posted January 9, 2016 Share #6 Posted January 9, 2016 Very nice crate. I have seen the Weimar Eagle like that on some weapons and equipment up to the late 1930's

warguy Posted January 16, 2016 Share #9 Posted January 16, 2016 WWII 9 mm ammo crate. I have one near new. This stick figure eagle, or wafflenampt is typical of WWII period markings, not necessarily Weimar. May be Luftwaffe. I have two 1942 German pistols with the same markings as well as a Luftwaffe officers sword with the identical eagle marking. Both pistols were used by the Luftwaffe. The Waffenampt used by the army had extended wings on the eagle, but again, it appears the Luftwaffe preferred with older style eagle. swmdo Posted January 16, 2016 Share #10 Posted January 16, 2016 I too have one sitting in my outer shed. Hope to use it in a display some day. Rare items now days mine has some red original paint but very faded. I like the old WW1 ammo boxes.
