TALLYHO Posted December 31, 2015 Share #1 Posted December 31, 2015 Any thoughts as to what method was used to form this 75mm trench art vase? Looking at the bottom it looks as though it was turned on a lathe.
IronJohnLogan Posted December 21, 2016 Share #2 Posted December 21, 2016 as a metalsmith I will say the casing was hammered with a technique called raising. this is working over "stakes" or specially shaped anvils on the inside hammering courses on the outside. Raising compresses the metal and allows for complex shapes to be made. The scratches that make it look like it was turned on a lathe are from a process called spinning. It uses a special lathe and pry bars to shape and bend the metal rather then removing metal like on a normal lathe. The finished vase does not look to be produced by spinning (as spinning is done over forms that dictate the final shape and then have to be removed. so think an open shape like a rocket nose cone - those are made by spinning), but maybe the original casing was made by spinning?
