TALLYHO Posted December 26, 2015 Share #1 Posted December 26, 2015 Two examples of shell casing trench art. It was common to use these as a vase. The one on the left is 11" tall. The work depicts oak branches. The oak branch signifies strength. The Germans military extensively incorporated the use of oak branches especially in their service medals. The other shell casing is 14" tall and has the Cross of Loraine on it. The cross was a patriotic symbol for the French and could be found being used as far back as the Templar Knights. Also beneath that is a poppy for Flanders where the French suffered over 86,000 casualties. Around the top is St Mihiel. A battle that took place between Sept 12-15 1918 involving the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) and French against The German 5th army.
