WW2 Nurse Frances L Sandstrom Spokane WA

Recommended Posts

A few years ago I was fortunate enough to pick up a group of uniforms and a foot locker from the estate of Frances L Sandstrom. Serial number N-737487. She was a nursing student in Spokane in 1940 and must have joined the army mid war? I have a some of her clothing including some dress clothing and blue nurses uniforms. I have searched archives.com but only found her on a census report and then possibly death notice both from Spokane WA area.

One of her ETO jackets has a 9th AAF patch on it.

Based on her name and nurse serial number does anybody have any info on her unit? Not sure if other sites have better info than archives.com?

When I get a chance I will see about adding some pics of the uniform grouping.

Using phone so forgive any spelling mistakes

Thanks Mike

Do you show her passing away on 11 Feb 2006, married name Crabtree ? Ancestry shows 2lT Frances Sandstrom being married in Spokane at Geiger Field to 2LT Roe Crabtree on 19 Jan 43. She was stationed at Ft George Wright at the time.

Googled: Frances Sandstrom Crabtree and got a hit on "Legends of Flight Nurses" we site. Has her application (too big to put here). She was a Flight Nurse in 819th Sqdrn, serving in England =. Show she had an Air Medal plus ETO ribbon with 3 stars. Plus more good assignment info.

I took a few pics of her group, unfortunately all I have is cloth. I took pics of most of the uniforms and those with tags. Best piece is the Type F-1 jacket. First I have had and near mint. Lot of pieces are named to Frances.

The blue nurses uniform is very rare!!! Congrats on finding it with the skirt! Very lucky find!

Thank you for the comments, I am very happy with the group, there were more items but I did not get the insignias and any paperwork.

Crazy thing I was reading through magazines I have and I found the October 1944 issue of Air Force and I found out the Frances L Sandstrom was the cover girl for this issue. Issue covers her times flying into Normandy on D +9 to fly wounded out of the war zone back to England. Interesting reading.

Couple excerpts from the magazine in the following posts
