EGA Afixed Helmets & Other Helmets Seller - cart32tfs on eBay

Recommended Posts

It took me about 4 years to find a M1917 Helmet with EGA that I felt "good" about. So I believe vintage ones are scarce. Many are helmets with hole made and EGA added in last 10 - 20 years. The above eBay seller sells many many helmets from all countries and usually his description starts with "Original" (I know the helmet is original but is EGA or paint, etc. original to time of use? What has prompted me to make this post is he has 4 or 5 "Original" M1917 helmets with EGA on eBay at the present time. Just TOO Many for me to accept. How About You? Have you dealt with him or her? Here is link for a couple of them. Richard

I noticed this seller with all these USMC helmets a while ago. You are correct in your suspicions. Nothing but a bunch of surplus helmet shells missing liners and recently added EGA's. Some of his completed listings show Vietnam EGA's on WWI Shells. About a 3rd of his listings are lamps he makes out of these.

I do like how he plays with the wording though.

"Original Helmet" with USMC Badge attached.

Saw these as well. As a student of WWI USMC helmets, I will be staying away. Kevin

I am eagerly collecting Pre-WWII USMC material. Any Marine Corps Span Am era, WWI, Banana Wars, or China Marine related material is especially sought after.

After reading this topic I looked at the listings for the helmets and contacted the seller. I asked him how he verified the originality and this is his interesting answer.

"Hi Bud, the forum is partially right. As I understand it all helmets that were stamped with ZA, ZB or ZC were used by our men in France 1917-1918. I have been buying up a lot of these helmets on ebay. I have been punching a hole in them, grinding off the excess metal and installing an original WWI marine EGA. This is exactly how they did it back then. I also do that with original helmets with a later EGA in the event that the person wants to save some money. The helmet that you are referencing (ZA188) is one of those. When was the last time you saw and "original" WWI Marine Helmet with an EGA that was installed in 1917-1918? How do you know if that EGA was installed during the war or by some guy last week. I am trying to fill a void here, not everyone can afford to hunt down a WWI Marine's family to ask them if their relative left a helmet. If my helmets are listed as original WWI, then they are. If the EGA is listed as original, then it is. I am not implying that I have discovered a warehouse full of WWI Marine helmets. I am also listing some "re-creations" in which I use some military helmets and install repro WW1 badges. These are not listed as original and I clearly state that they are re-creations. I sell them cheap for the guy who just wants a symbol. As you can see, my feedback is near perfect. I have sold a lot of these helmets and I have not had any bad comments. I believe that most guys realize that a 100% original is out of their price range and they would never be able to afford one. I am sure that there are a lot of purists out there who think what I'm doing is wrong. I am a retired Master Sergeant an a patriot. I hope this explains the situation. Carson"

Just dozens and dozens more that will confuse beginning and maybe a few not so new collectors. So call them what ever gives him an excuse for doing something wrong, as without being clear what he is selling, is wrong. If his statement like he sent above was with each listing it would be "a little less" distasteful. We all know where most of his "better" ones will appear in a few more years after a few exchanges among various parties. Richard
