Backmark is "N.R. Co. / Goodyear's P=T". Due to it's smaller size it has an abbreviated backmark similar to Albert's GI-95Av. The full size button would include "1851", the patent date of this process of hard rubber buttons. This button was produced by "Novelty Rubber Company" of New York & New Jersey from 1855-1865, they were licensed to use the Goodyear patents of producing buttons. Charles Goodyear originally discovered the process of producing hard rubber in 1839 and his brother Nelson patented the improved process of manufacturing rubber items in 1849 & 1851. Tice as well as Albert lists this button only for the Brigade of U.S. Sharpshooters.
