That's cool, I suspect it's a cap device for a service cap worn when the GI had all his buttons and collar discs in Nickle. Remember, in the 60s and 70s as a alternative AG 44 coats could have the Brass buttons removed and have Nickle ones sewn on, this meant only Nickle collar discs could then be worn.

thats interesting, my knowledge on dress uniforms is quite lacking past korea

I just sold a uniform that was set up like that... If I remember, the man was with the fraction of the 5th Division that went to Vietnam, and later became a sergeant-major in some capacity at the JFK Special Warfare School.
