Thanks Randy, perhaps you zoomies will start up an Ace Novelty reference topic on the USAF board

Aircraft Carrier USS AMERICA (CV-66) Made for the Shellback Initiation in June 1977, Atlantic Ocean

I'd like to, but there don't seem to be too many of my fellow zoomies out there! One guy tried to start a few other USAF related threads, but he and I were the only posters. It's an Army world... ;)

USS WALKER (DD-517) Three war Fletcher class in service 1943 to 1969, Escort Destroyer Squadron One,

CORTDESDIV 11, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii

post-2322-0-59212100-1514606962.jpg

In July 1951 WALKER joined the newly formed Escort Destroyer Squadron ONE based at Pearl Harbor, T. H., and there became the fourth member of Escort Destroyer Division ELEVEN.

In November 1951, WALKER departed for the Western Pacific area and there joined the United Nations Blockading Force assisting our ground troops in the Korean War. She escorted the fast carrier task forces that were steaming up and down the hostile shores supporting our Army with strategic air strikes. The fourfold dangers from enemy mines, submarines, air attacks and the bitter cold were never too great for WALKER. More than once the ground forces found enemy fire threatening their advances and called WALKER in for call fire shore bombardment. She chalked up several artillery emplacements and railroad installations. March 1952 found CORTDESDIV 11 back in Pearl Harbor.

USS CORAL SEA (CV-43) Iranian Hostage Crisis - WESTPAC 1979-1980 - Iranian Crisis - Gonzo Station

Gonzo Station was a U.S. Navy acronym for "Gulf of Oman Naval Zone of Operations" or "Gulf of Oman Northern Zone." It was used to designate an area of carrier-based naval operations by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps in the Indian Ocean during the 1979-1981 Iranian Hostage Crisis and the so-called Tanker War between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

post-2322-0-49395700-1534460062_thumb.jpg

On 4 November 1979, militant followers of the Ayatollah Khomeini (who had come to power following the overthrow of the Shah of Iran) seized the US Embassy in Tehran and held 63 Americans hostage. Thus began the Iran hostage crisis.

The USS Midway (CV-41) initiated the longest at-sea record for any U.S. warship since World War II by being at-sea for 93 consecutive days. It was the first on-scene carrier at the beginning of the Iranian Hostage Crisis, followed shortly thereafter by USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63), with both carriers executing simultaneous air operations and carrier presence in the vicinity of one another off the southern coast of Iran.

USS Coral Sea (CV-43) relieved Midway in the northern part of the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Iran, on 5 February 1980. This operating area was nicknamed Gonzo Station by the men on the ships operating there, apparently because of its vicinity to Iran and the assumption that war with Iran was likely.

Later, along with Nimitz and other ships in company, Coral Sea participated in Operation Evening Light, the unsuccessful and aborted rescue attempt of 24 April 1980. (Their aircraft played a supporting role.) The crew of Coral Sea and other ships in the company received the Navy Expeditionary Medal for their efforts. By the time the ship pulled into Subic Bay, the Philippines for a port call on 9 May 1980 the crew had spent 102 consecutive days at sea – mostly off the coast of Iran. (The Iran hostage crisis ended on 20 January 1981 when Ronald Reagan succeeded Jimmy Carter as President of the United States and Iran released the Americans.)

At this time (1979–1981) the ship was commanded by Captain (later Admiral) Richard Dunleavy, who was to play a role in the Tailhook scandal, which forced him into retirement. However, while commanding Coral Sea he was considered an excellent commanding officer by his crew, who respected him greatly, even though they worked long, difficult hours under him and he could be a strict disciplinarian

AIRASRON FORTY ONE (VS-41) SHAMROCKS - An ASW training squadron for crews of anti-submarine aircraft established on 30 June 1960 as an anti-submarine squadron. The squadron was nicknamed the Shamrocks and based at the Naval Air Station North Island, California

VS-41 was originally activated in 1960 to train the crews of Grumman S-2 Tracker anti-submarine aircraft for the United States Navy. Two squadrons equipped with the Tracker were based each on the anti-submarine carriers (CVS) of the Essex-class to counter the threat of the large Soviet submarine fleet. In the mid-1970 both the CVS-carriers and the S-2 Tracker were phased out.

First patch (1960's) as a training squadron (note the lamp), and the more familiar SHAMROCKS patch.
