Salvage Sailor Posted February 17, 2019 Author Share #57 Posted February 17, 2019 USS DECATUR (DDG-31) Built and commissioned in 1956 as a Forrest Sherman class destroyer (DD-936), in 1964 she was heavily damaged in a collision with the aircraft carrier USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CVS-39). DECATUR was rebuilt, redesignated and commissioned as a guided missile destroyer in 1966 and served in this capacity until her decommissioning in 1983. Salvage Sailor Posted April 28, 2019 Author Share #59 Posted April 28, 2019 USS CASCADE (AD-16) Destroyer Tender, only ship in it's class, in service 1943 to 1974 Hilborn Hamburger version made during her Cold War assignment as flagship Sixth Fleet. During this time Cascade served as flagship, and carried the flag of Commander, Service Force, 6th Fleet, and the flag of Commander, Destroyer Flotilla 6. She also served as flagship for Commander, Destroyer Force, Atlantic. She served in this role as flagship and tender up through 1963. Salvage Sailor Posted February 8, 2020 Author Share #72 Posted February 8, 2020 USS KINKAID (DD-965) Spruance class in service 1976 to 2003 - The 'new' Spruance class destroyers being commissioned in 1976 (KINKAID was the third one) were the last USN ship patches that H-H made for the fleet. When Hilborn-Hamburger (and Gemsco) ceased production after the fall of Saigon, Swiss-Tex picked up the slack and went into full production of USN patches until they ceased in 1991. She started her naval career as a Destroyer Escort (DE-1070) and was reclassified as a Fast Frigate (FF-1070) in 1975 making this a very easy patch to date as Hilborn Hamburger stopped production of naval patches circa 1976.
